As a long-time crocheter, I’ve always been drawn to calm and aesthetic colors and interesting textures that yarn brings to my craft. Selecting an ideal yarn for my next project is always an exciting process! However, alongside all the creative ideas and excitement —making sustainable choices is a must. In this post, I will share my experiences in choosing sustainable yarn versus conventional options. I will also give a brief overview of my favourite crochet tools that help me create an outstanding crochet item.
Why is Sustainability Important
There are innumerable reasons for choosing a sustainable yarn for one´s project. Sustainable yarn is indeed eco-friendly, but it is also better for our planet in the long run. Today, more and more people are moving towards a more eco-friendly lifestyle, which also has an impact on the future of arts & crafts. Sustainable yarns are made of materials with low to no environmental impact, including organic cotton, bamboo, and wool from ethically raised sheep. For example, growing organic cotton does not include using harmful pesticides. Therefore, it leads to more healthy farming practices and also supports biodiversity.
On the other hand, unsustainable yarn typically includes synthetic fibers like acrylic and nylon. These materials, derived from petroleum, contribute to environmental pollution and can take up to 200 years to break down. While they are often cheaper and available in a multitude of colors, I weigh these benefits against the significant environmental costs every time I visit the yarn store.
Sustainable Yarn Options
There are various sustainable yarn options to choose from. Here are a few of my favorite types:
Organic Cotton: Soft and lightweight, it's perfect for garments and baby items. For example, I recently made a beautiful baby blanket using organic cotton.
Bamboo Yarn: Known for its luxurious feel, it's ideal for summer shawls or lightweight cardigans. I crafted a breezy summer top with bamboo yarn that became my go-to item for warm days.
Merino Wool: Gathering from free-range sheep, this wool is soft, breathable, and wonderfully warm, suited perfectly for cozy winter projects like hats and scarves. I used merino wool for a scarf last winter that kept me cozy during the colder months.
Tencel: Made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus trees, Tencel has a silky texture and moisture-wicking properties, making it perfect for warm-weather items. I recently used Tencel in a shawl that was both stylish and practical.
With such diverse sustainable materials, there are no limits to creativity, and I personally feel empowered to make responsible choices during my crochet projects.

Essential Tools for a Better Crochet Experience
The choice of correct crochet tools is the corner stone for creating a successful creative project. I find the following tools essential while doing crochet:
Crochet Hooks in Multiple Sizes: Although most of a crochet project is usually done with one crochet hook only, I tend to have a need for smaller hooks as well to finish off a specific part of the project or hide the end of the yarn inside the item.
Yarn Winder and Swift: I have only recently started using these tools and I can say that my crochet projects take much less time now than before. Both yarn winder and swift prevent the yarn from tangling which makes my workflow much smoother and less time-consuming.
In addition, having a set of stitch markers is invaluable for tracking progress and counting rows. They ensure I stay organized, especially for larger projects.
Embracing Sustainable Crochet Practices
I encourage everyone to take a step further into the economically friendly lifestyle and try out sustainable yarn options for your next crochet projects!
